We can all get struck with a case of the blues from time to time and its really easy to get sucked into a place where it’s hard for us to find a way out. However, here are some tips to help you bring a little positivity in if you are going through a patch where your mood may be lower than you’d like for whatever reason –
- Get yourself a nice new notebook and take a moment to think about all the upbeat things you can write in it. What is it about new stationery that’s so lush?!
- Use that notebook for a variety of lovely lists – fun things you want to do/achieve, things you are looking forward to, things that make you feel happy, people you love being around that boost your mood, things you are grateful for, things that have made you smile that day.
- Make sure you are getting outside every day. Yes it’s cosy in the house, but take a deep breath of fresh air, even if the day is a bit gloomy – it will pick up your mood.
- Get your hand on Linda Geddes’ book “Chasing the sun”, it’s super interesting and with loads of take homes in there that you can use to help yourself. If you’re not a reader, listen to Dr Chatterjee’s podcast with her. All his podcasts are on his website.
- Do something nice for someone else. Something a little bit out of the ordinary that requires a bit more effort than opening a door for instance. Something that makes you go a little bit out of your way. An act of kindness to bring happiness to someone else will definitely help lift your own mood.
- Stop watching depressing things on tv. And yes, I class the news in that bracket as well. I know some people love the news and I understand sometimes you need to watch it for practical reasons (eg your job), but if you don’t have to, why expose yourself to things that are negative unnecessarily? Confession – I haven’t watched the news intentionally in probably 2 or more years (obviously sometimes you accidentally catch something but I never ever put it on myself and always turn it off if my husband has put it on). Ok, you can’t have an intelligent conversation with me about current affairs, but never mind, my mental well-being is better for it!
- Cut out the crap food and booze for a week or more and reassess how you feel. When your body is bogged down with unhealthy foods it absolutely affects your mood (I refer you to another great lady worth reading about – Felice Jacka who conducted a huge study and showed amazing changes in people with depression just from changing their diets).
- Even better – book a consult with us to find out more about our RejuvaWellness programme. People report huge uplifts in mood from it (along with energy lifts and many other things too).
- Finally, make sure you’re getting a good nights sleep. Sleep is so underrated and under talked about and it is SO important. Make your wind down to sleep really relaxing with a nice bath if you can, or candles in your room (do not doze off though with them on!). Personally, my favourite relaxing thing at the moment is listening to the sound of a crackling campfire on the Calm app – it’s SO lush.
Hope these help you all a little and if you need any more in-depth, one to one help, you know where I am to talk to.
